Mount Airy (Mayberry)

This blog is not just about my hiking trips though that's the majority of my post. As the name says, it's about my jaunts to what I consider interesting places. Mount Airy is certainly interesting, especially if you enjoyed the Andy Griffith Show.

The jail, sheriffs office, and courthouse was a real place. It looks exactly like that in the show, except they made it look more spacious in the TV show. It's really a tiny little place.

In honor of Ottis, his picture hangs on the wall.

The other half of the courthouse/jail. You'll notice a jar below the fan. That's a jar of Aunt Bea's infamous pickles. One of my favorite episodes.

Next to the courthouse is Wally's, where Gomer and Goober Pyle worked.

A couple tow trucks of that era.

The flatbed truck of the guitar and banjo playing Darlins.

The home place of Andy Griffith. It seems to me that the home in the show was a two-story house because Opie's bedroom was upstairs.

The original Floyd's Barber Shop is still in operation.

The dinner that was mentioned in the TV show. Famous for their pork chop sandwiches and if you get everything that comes on the sandwich it is a meal in itself.

Some other attraction that I found of interest is a course the brewery called White Elephant. It's located at 225 Market St just a block from Floyd's Barber Shop.

I'm not sure why they call this Granite City Greenway when it's located in the city of Mount Airy and starts at Riverside Park. It's a greenway that follows the Ararat River for 6.6 miles. Gypsy and I walked only 3/4 of a mile downstream, then turned around and walked back to the park. I was only trying to kill off an hour worth of time till the brewery opened a 4 pm. We had already done plenty of walking this day because the courthouse and Wally's was 1/2 mile down from the center of town. We parked at the public parking on Franklin St and walked everywhere.
