The Great River Trail starts to the left of the Savanna Train Car Museum parking area off Broaderick Dr. It's an ugly beginning with an 8-foot chainlink fence on both sides. To the left is what appears to be something like a railyard, and to the right is a storage lot for camping trailers.

I have never seen railroad tracks cross each other. This is called Savanna Diamond Railroad Crossing.
Once you cross the railroad tracks, you enter the nature portion of the trail. To the left, you view Bowens Lake, and to the right, there is the Plum River. Eventually, the river takes a big bend and curves, and you cross the river over this bridge.

Bowens Lake.
This is where I ended my walk at the observation platform overlooking Spring Lake. A half-mile beyond this point, the trail followed along a highway.
