Mississippi Palisades State Park - Indian Head, Pine, Sentinel, Sunset Trails

The Mississippi Palisades State Park is a well-maintained park except for the South portion of the park, which was closed probably due to being understaffed. The Indian Head Trail is located at the south end, and the road within the park that took you to the trailhead was closed, but I found another way to access the trail via the Scenic Ridge Road. Starting from a gate from Scenic Ridge Road down a two-track road, a half-mile walk, you entered the closed part of the park, which was all overgrown and very abandoned looking. The trail obviously wasn't traveled much due to no access from the park.

This is one of the few parks in Illinois that has rock climbing, and this is the trail that gives rock climbs access to Indian Rock. There is no fence, so I needed to be cautious. In this picture, I am looking down at the top of Indian Rock, and the Mississippi River is off in the distance.

I got to see this barge going down the Mississippi. This is a zoom-in pic.

A view of Illinois State Route 84 and the Riverport Rail Line.

The Indian Head Trail is a  short separate trail on its own, and the Sentinel, Sunset, and Pine Trails are connected. I hiked the Pine Trail in the evening and realized I didn't have enough daylight to make the other trails. I got the beautiful sunset through the trees.

This pic gives you a visual of typically what all these trails look like.

A zoom-in looking towards the south at a boat and the Savanna-Sabula Bridge.

The view of the Mississippi was beautiful.

Had to skirt around a large boulder.
